Terms of Service

The short version

Margin is a workspace for college applications. The AI reviews your writing; it never writes for you. Use the product honestly and we'll do our best to keep it useful, free during beta, and out of your way.

Beta status

Margin is in private beta. Features may change, break, or disappear without warning. Performance, uptime, and data durability are best-effort, not guaranteed. We'll communicate major changes by email.

What Margin is, and what it isn't

Margin is a workspace and a coach. The AI grades your essays, scores your activities, asks the questions your draft is missing, and prioritizes what to work on next.

Margin is not an essay writing service, a ghostwriter, or an admissions guarantee. The AI will not write a sentence, paraphrase a paragraph, or produce paste-ready content for you. We've deliberately designed the product around that line.

What you agree to

• The writing you submit through Margin is your own. You will not attempt to use Margin to circumvent academic honesty policies at your high school or any college you apply to.
• You will not abuse the AI features (rate-limited per account) or attempt to extract content for use outside the product in ways that violate the authorship line above.
• You are responsible for backing up anything you cannot lose. We offer data export from Settings; use it before major deadlines.
• You must be at least 13 years old to use Margin. If you're under 18, you confirm you have a parent or guardian's permission.

Your account

You're responsible for the security of your account credentials. If you believe your account has been accessed by someone else, change your password and email us.

We may suspend or close accounts that violate these terms: abuse of the AI features, attempts to ghostwrite for other students, harassment, or attempts to compromise the product. Where possible we'll warn first.

Ownership

You own what you write. We have a limited license to store, process, and display your content within Margin so the product can do its job. We do not claim ownership of your drafts, your essays, or your application data. We do not use them to train AI models.

No admissions guarantees

Nothing in Margin (score, rubric feedback, dashboard recommendation, AI critique) is a prediction or guarantee of admission. Admissions decisions depend on factors entirely outside our product. Use the feedback as one input among many.

Service availability and changes

We aim for the product to be available whenever you need it, but we make no uptime guarantees during beta. We may change features, pricing (currently free), or shut down the service. If we do, we'll give registered users a reasonable window to export their data first.

Liability

Margin is provided "as is." We're not liable for missed deadlines, lost work, admissions outcomes, or anything else that depends on factors outside the product. Use it as a tool that helps you do your work, not as a substitute for doing it.

Changes to these terms

If we materially change these terms, we'll email registered users before the change takes effect. Continued use after that email counts as acceptance.
