The short version
Margin is a workspace for high school students working on college applications. We collect the information you give us so the product can do its job: review your essays, track your deadlines, and score your activities. We don't sell your data. We don't use your drafts to train models. You can delete your account and your data at any time.
What we collect
- Account info:name, email, graduation year, high school, state, intended majors, and the application rounds you're targeting.
- Application data: the schools on your list, the applications you create, deadlines, recommendation letter status, and any notes you write.
- Drafts and feedback: the essays, activities, research notes, and letters of continued interest you write inside Margin, plus the AI feedback associated with them.
- Usage data: standard server logs (timestamps, browser type, IP address) and product analytics events so we can understand which features are useful.
How we use it
- To run the product: show you your data, save your work, prioritize tasks, generate AI reviews.
- To send essential service emails: verification, password reset, deadline reminders.
- To improve the product. We may look at aggregate usage patterns (which features get used most, where students get stuck), but we don't read your individual drafts to inform decisions unless you've explicitly asked for support.
Who we share it with
We use a small set of standard service providers to run the product:
- Firebase (Google Cloud): account authentication, database, file storage. Your data is encrypted at rest.
- OpenAI:AI essay and activity reviews. We send the specific draft and rubric context needed to generate the review; we do not enable OpenAI's training-on-data option.
- Vercel: hosting and serverless functions.
We do not sell your data to advertisers, third-party marketers, data brokers, or admissions consultants. Period.
Your drafts and your authorship
What you write inside Margin is yours. The AI reads your drafts to grade them and ask questions; it does not produce essays for you and we do not store, share, or repurpose your writing for anything beyond running the product for you. If you delete your account, your drafts and feedback are deleted along with it.
Your rights
You can export your data at any time from Settings → Data Export. You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete Account. Deletion removes everything you wrote inside Margin (drafts, feedback, applications, research, activity lists) within seven days.
If you're under 13, please don't sign up. Margin is designed for high school students, and we don't knowingly collect data from children under 13. If we learn we have, we'll delete it.
Cookies
We use a single authentication cookie to keep you signed in between visits. We don't use third-party tracking cookies or advertising pixels.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy in a way that materially changes what we do with your data, we'll email registered users before the change takes effect.
